More than four in ten American voters believe that the country is headed towards a second civil war by the end of the decade, a new survey suggests, reflecting growing concerns about violence in the wake of the 2024 election.

According to the results of a Rasmussen poll conducted via phone in April, 41 percent of the 1,105 likely voters surveyed fear that civil war will erupt by 2029, including 16 percent who think this outcome is “very likely.” Conversely, 49 percent of respondents think this outcome is unlikely and an additional 10 percent were unsure.

Extrapolating to a national scale, this poll indicates that 106 million Americans are convinced that war is imminent. The survey also revealed that most voters expect the country to move towards a major civil conflict regardless of the outcome of the 2024 election, with 37 percent believing that a victory for President Joe Biden makes war more likely and 25 percent thinking the same thing of former President Donald Trump.

Another 30 percent say that the election results will have no effect on the inevitable march toward civil war.

At a granular level, Rasmussen found that women, young voters, and non-Whites are the most concerned about the outbreak of war. Among Republicans, 54 percent of voters predict that a civil war will happen within the next five years, compared to a much smaller percentage of Democrats.

The results of this survey come at a time when public awareness of divisive civil issues is at an all-time high. In addition to the mass protests playing out on college campuses and the general discontentment with the current two-party political system, Rasmussen also points to the release of the aptly-named A24 film “Civil War,” which debuted as No. 1 at the box office last month and brought talk of secession and national divorce to the forefront.
