Nearly 2 million soft Yeti coolers and gear cases have been recalled because of detachable magnetic parts posing health risks if swallowed.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued the recall on Thursday, stating that the magnets in the magnet-lined closures can detach, posing a serious risk of injury or death if ingested.

Recalled items include:

  • YETI Hopper M30 Soft Cooler 1.0 and 2.0: 25 inches wide, 17 inches high ($300-$350)
  • Hopper M20 Soft Backpack Cooler: 18 inches wide, 18 inches high ($325)
  • Sidekick Dry Gear Case: 11 inches wide, 7 inches high ($50)

“The firm has received 1,399 reports of the magnet-lined closures degrading or failing, including reports of missing or detached magnets. No magnet ingestions or injuries have been reported,” according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission report.

The CPSC said when two or more high-powered magnets are swallowed, the ingested magnets can attract to each other, or to another metal object, and become clamped in the digestive system. This can result in punctures, twisting’s and/or intestinal blockage infection, blood poisoning and in some cases, death.
