As Patrick says, many leaders might rush to say they would rather be feared. But in Patrick’s opinion, the answer to the question is “why?” and “to whom?” — it depends on the context and the person in question.

If you are president of the United States, you would want Chinese President Xi Jinping to fear and respect you. You might also want him to like you, in order for negotiations to be easier. But why would you need him to love you?

If you are the parent of a newborn, you would want to be loved. It would not yet be the time for respect, and certainly not fear — that would be strange.

But if you are the parent of an unruly 13-year-old, the dynamic is a bit different. You want respect and a little bit of fear, so they acknowledge your guidance.

And if you are the parent of a 28-year-old, you mainly want to be liked and loved. Why at that age would you require them to fear you?

It get even more complicated when we talk about spouses. It is heavily dependent on the culture you find yourself in.
