If you thought the Patriot Act being passed over 20 years ago was a breach of privacy, it’s about to potentially get worse.
As we speak, there is a bill under consideration in the United States Congress, known as “The Restrict Act.”
This was developed in an effort to ban Chinese Communist Party threats from infiltrating information and collecting data from Americans via TikTok.
According to a press release from the office of U.S. Sens. Mark R. Warner (D-VA), Sen. Manchin says, “I’m proud to introduce the bipartisan RESTRICT ACT, which will empower the Department of Commerce to adopt a comprehensive approach to evaluating and mitigating these threats posed by technology products. As Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, I will continue working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to get this critical legislation across the finish line.”
Bad things start with good intentions, and as if our government took a page from their “Patriot Act” bill proposal, there seems to be some fine print we should not overlook.
Americans took to Twitter to express the blurred lines of this bill, stating that it isn’t just access granted for foreign-owned apps like TikTok but for EVERY inch of technology using internet. Our U.S. government would become even more of a big brother.
Here are some reactions via Twitter to the proposed bill:
Everyone’s heard about the TikTok Bill right? The government is about to pull one over on all of us again. The RESTRICT ACT known as the tiktok ban, bill S.686 pic.twitter.com/98CvSs1SRn

US Senate Bill 686, The Restrict Act, wants to put you in jail for 20 years for using a VPN for using a website or app.
So apparently you are not allowed to evade US internet censorship anymore…..

The Restrict Act – Senate Bill s686 aka #TikTokBan, which also makes VPNs to access restricted apps and content illegal, is a police-state, CIA, alphabet agency crafted bill that makes the Patriot Act look mild.
This needs much more attention from activists than it's getting. pic.twitter.com/NHZ7OO2MuW

I’m sure many Americans agree that TikTok has greatly affected our society negatively significantly more than positively – I am sure many of us have also been aware that the chances of China spying on Americans and collecting our information via the platform for quite some time.
This bill, however, proposes the protection many of us have been waiting for when it comes to the app but not for an exchange of spies invading our privacy, especially creeper peepers from the inside. No, thanks. Pay attention to how this develops, folks.
