Donald Trump said on Monday that he would offer Elon Musk an advisory or cabinet position if he wins the election in November. Trump said he would appoint him to such a position, “if he would do it,” in an interview with Reuters

In the same interview, Trump was asked about electric vehicle tax credits. “Tax credits and tax incentives are not generally a very good thing,” Trump told the outlet, though he ultimately said, “I’m not making any final decision on it.”

Earlier this month, Trump seemed willing for Elon Musk to play a role in a “government efficiency commission,” in his conversation with Musk on an X space. Musk told Trump: “I think it would be great to just have a government efficiency commission that takes a look at these things and, and just ensures that the taxpayer money [goes] to the taxpayers, hard earned money is spent in a good way. And I’d be happy to help out on such a commission.” Trump responded by complimenting his fiscal approach to his businesses, “Well, you, you’re the greatest cutter. I mean, I look at what you do.”

Donald Trump Jr. came out in support of the idea last week: “Who else loves the idea of Elon Musk heading up a government efficiency committee to eliminate the likely trillions of dollars of waste we have in our bloated bureaucracy? I can’t imagine a better person for the task. Trump will make this happen!”

Every year, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) releases a “Festivus Report” highlighting wasteful government spending. The 2023 report highlighted $900 billion in government wasteful spending. It included details on $6 million spent to aid Egyptian tourism, $12 million on an NIH study examining meth usage in monkeys, and $236 billion in improper Federal payments.
