President-elect Donald Trump issued a stark warning to BRICS nations over the weekend, threatening to impose a 100% tariff on countries that attempt to create or support a currency to replace the US dollar. In a post on Truth Social, Trump emphasized the need for these nations, which include Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, to commit to not pursuing alternative currencies or face severe economic consequences.
“The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER,” Trump declared. “We require a commitment from these Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty U.S. Dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful U.S. Economy.”

Trump has long maintained that the US dollar should remain the world’s reserve currency, and this announcement reflects his intent to enforce that policy aggressively. The BRICS group, which is now made up of nine countries with nearly a dozen more interested in joining, had been discussing the idea of a new currency, which has gained traction amid growing dissatisfaction with dollar dominance. Russia in particular has emphasized the need for a new reserve currency as a way to evade Western sanctions. This move is seen as part of a broader strategy to maintain US economic hegemony in global trade. It also mirrors Trump’s threat of a 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico in an effort to end the flow of fentanyl and illegal immigrants across the northern and southern borders. Since making this threat, the leaders of both countries have reached out to the president-elect for “very productive” conversations about how to address the issue.
