President-elect Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he is nominating former advisor Kashyap ‘Kash’ Patel as the new FBI director, replacing Christopher Wray, who has been criticized by Trump despite being his appointee in 2017. Patel, known for his loyalty to Trump, is seen as part of Trump’s strategy to transform law enforcement agencies and target perceived adversaries.
“Kash is a brilliant lawyer, investigator, and ‘America First’ fighter who has spent his career exposing corruption, defending Justice, and protecting the American People,” Trump said in a statement. “He played a pivotal role in uncovering the Russia, Russia, Russia Hoax, standing as an advocate for truth, accountability, and the Constitution.”
“Kash did an incredible job during my First Term, where he served as Chief of Staff at the Department of Defense, Deputy Director of National Intelligence, and Senior Director for Counterterrorism at the National Security Council,” Trump continued. “Kash has also tried over 60 jury trials.”

At the helm of the FBI, Patel will be tasked with addressing the “growing crime epidemic in America” and will “dismantle the migrant criminal gangs, and stop the evil scourge of human and drug trafficking across the Border.”
The FBI director, who answers directly to the US Attorney General, is appointed for a single term not to exceed 10 years. Patel’s nomination, which may face Senate opposition, reflects Trump’s ongoing grievances over the “lawfare campaigns” that Wray has overseen under the Biden administration. It also means that Wray must now either step down or be fired once Trump takes office.
Patel, the son of Indian immigrants, has been a longtime Trump supporter and a hardline critic of the Deep State, even writing a book about federal bureaucrats’ secret efforts to undermine the former president. He has previously called for significant changes to the FBI, including reducing its intelligence role, and even relocating its headquarters, converting the DC building into “the Museum of the Deep State.”
