The long-running joke of Hispanics using cleaning products like Fabuloso to disinfect everything in their homes may come to an end.  The famous cleaning product, Fabuloso, was quickly recalled and rushed off the shelves on Wednesday after a risk of bacterial contamination was discovered.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 4.9 million units of the cleaning product were recalled due to possible exposure of Pseudomonas species bacteria. Those with weakened immune systems, underlying lung conditions or using medical devices are of at the highest risks of infection. The bacteria can be inhaled, enter through the eyes and enter through the skin.

Several types of Fabuloso Multi-Purpose cleaners produced from Dec. 14 to Jan. 23 and sold online and in retailers including Amazon, Dollar General and Walmart were quickly recalled after discovering the exposure. Colgate-Palmolive said in a statement, that although the preservative had not been added “at intended levels” during the manufacturing process, there is a very strong possibility that the inadequate amount of the preservative might have allowed this bacterium to grow.

In a recent tweeted response to customers, Colgate responded with its company press release statement:

Over 56,000 bottles of Fabuloso were also recalled in Canada after the contamination discovery. The recall did not include bottles of Fabuloso’s antibacterial cleaner but consumers who have recently ordered with scents including lavender, lemon and ocean scents are encouraged to dispose of the product and contact Colgate-Palmolive for a full refund.

In response to the recall, the Palmolive company stated, “We remain committed to maintaining the highest level of product quality and have taken action to help ensure we live up to those standards.”

This is the latest cleaning product to be recalled after over 37 million bottles of scented Pine-Sol were recalled last October and close to 8 million bottles of the Laundress brand products were recalled in December.
