Supporters of both sides of the Israel-Palestine conflict clashed in competing rallies in major European and American cities on Sunday, leading to security concerns throughout the Western world. Washington DC, New York City, London, Berlin, and other urban centers saw marches celebrating the actions of the Islamic militant group Hamas, leading to run-ins with pro-Israel counter-protesters and highlighting the wide-ranging ramifications of the conflict.

The latest round of hostilities between Israel and Hamas began early on Saturday when the Gaza-based terrorist group launched a surprise attack its leaders have dubbed “Operation Al-Aqsa Storm.” The assault began with an estimated 5,000 missile strikes against military and civilian targets under Israel’s Iron Dome, followed by drone bombings and bulldozer attacks on Israel’s border defenses. Hamas then deployed more than 1,000 militants into Israeli territory via paragliders, trucks, and boats, making it the largest Palestinian incursion in decades.

Reports in the aftermath of the invasion claim more than 800 civilians have been killed, including nine Americans. Kidnappings, rapes, and other acts of brutality are being inflicted across Israel, leading to international condemnation. However, as the conflict continues, those sympathetic to the Palestinian cause have seized the opportunity to condemn Israel’s “apartheid and oppression.”

The United States’ largest pro-Palestine rally took place in New York City’s Times Square, where the Democratic Socialists of America organized an “All Out for Palestine” demonstration a block away from the United Nations building.

Protesters donned checkered keffiyeh headscarves, waved the Palestinian flag, and carried signs with slogans calling to “Free Palestine” and end American aid to Israel. Across the street, a group of counter-protesters waved Israeli flags and chanted “Shame on you!” at the pro-Palestinians. Police attempted to keep the two groups separated with metal barricades, but brief skirmishes broke out nonetheless, leading to trampled flags and aggressive confrontations.

The day before the rally, New York Governor Kathy Hochul condemned the planned event as “abhorrent and morally repugnant.” New York notably has the world’s largest Jewish population outside Israel itself.

The DSA (of which Congressional Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Cori Bush, Ilhan Omar, Jamaal Bowman, and Greg Casar are members) also hosted events in a number of other cities, with its various chapters expressing Palestinian solidarity on social media. Other non-DSA rallies were hosted in Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, and Fort Lauderdale, and a sizeable pro-Palestine crowd even gathered outside the White House itself.

Events in either condemnation or celebration of the conflict were mirrored across Europe as well, with reports of street demonstrations in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Germany, and elsewhere.

As the bloodshed in Israel continues, Western governments are expressing concern that the violence could spread as a result. This weekend’s protests were met with increased security at local synagogues and Jewish community centers in nearly every major city as authorities prepare for possible retaliation.
