Sha’Carri Richardson took home the 100-meter gold at her debut at track and field’s World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary on Monday.

At the World Athletics Championships held in Budapest, Hungary, a remarkable feat unfolded on the track as Richardson surged ahead of Jamaican sprinters Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson. Clocking in at an astonishing 10.65 seconds, she clinched the gold medal in the fiercely contested 100-meter final.

In achieving this feat, Richardson now shares the title of the fifth-fastest woman in history alongside Jackson and track sensation Marion Jones, effectively shattering the championship record in the process.

“I’m honored, I’m blessed, I had great competition, [which] pulled the best out of me, and I’m just honored to leave with a gold medal,” she told reporters after the race.

Richardson promised to keep working and improving. “I’m going to stay humble,” she said. “I’m not back. I’m better, and I’ll continue to be better.”

Richardson, 23, emerged victorious at the Tokyo Olympic Trials 100m four years ago. However, her triumph was short-lived as a positive marijuana test led to the nullification of her result. In the past year, she faced disappointment when she was eliminated during the initial round of the 100m at the nationals.

The highlight during a press conference was when Richardson was asked about Fraser-Pryce to which she said, “I grew up watching her.” After sharing a curious glance at the comment, both women burst into laughter.

Richardson’s 100m win was the first women’s 100-meter world championship by an American since 2017, when Tori Bowie accomplished the feat.
