Ann Altman, sister of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, filed a lawsuit against her brother on Monday, alleging sexual abuse during their childhood from 1997 to 2006 and seeking $75,000 in damages.

The case, brought to federal court in Missouri, claims the abuse began when Ann was three and Sam was 12 and included severe emotional distress.

According to the suit, “as a direct and proximate result of the foregoing acts of sexual assault,” the plaintiff has experienced “severe emotional distress, mental anguish, and depression, which is expected to continue into the future.”

Ann has made similar accusations against Sam and their brother, Jack Altman, in the past, declaring in a 2021 Twitter post that she had experienced “sexual, physical, emotional, verbal, financial, and technological abuse from my biological siblings.”

Sam Altman and his family have publicly denied the allegations, describing them as “utterly untrue” and attributing them to Ann’s mental health challenges.

The family claims to have supported Ann financially and medically, expressing concern for her well-being despite her demands for more money.

“Annie has made deeply hurtful and entirely untrue claims about our family, and especially Sam,” a joint statement from Sam and Jack Altman, along with third brother Max and mother Connie, said on Tuesday. “We’ve chosen not to respond publicly, out of respect for her privacy and our own. However, she has now taken legal action against Sam, and we feel we have no choice but to address this.”

Ann’s legal team dismisses the family’s claims about her mental health as irrelevant to the allegations’ validity. This lawsuit adds to the legal challenges facing OpenAI, including a separate lawsuit from Elon Musk regarding contract breaches.
