Russia reportedly launched an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) attack on the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro early Thursday morning, destroying facilities used for repairing military equipment and causing two fires, as reported by regional authorities. The attack follows Ukraine’s use of advanced US missiles against Russian targets, suggesting a tit-for-tat escalation.
The attack severely impacted a local rehabilitation center, resulting in the destruction of its boiler room and shattered windows. In response to the escalating situation, Ukraine’s largest power generator, DTEK, announced emergency power outages in several regions, including Kyiv and Odesa. The Ukrainian Air Force had previously issued an air raid warning due to detected missile threats. There were no reported casualties from the recent shelling, but the threat of further attacks remains.

The head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration, Serhii Lysak, confirmed the assault, which included strikes from Russian Tu-95 aircraft and the use of Kinzhal missiles. However, Western sources remain skeptical, asserting it may not have been an ICBM but rather a new ballistic missile type. At the same time, French officials indicated that if the missile is confirmed as an ICBM, it would warrant a serious response.
The Kremlin has denied the use of nuclear warheads in the strike, emphasizing efforts to avoid nuclear conflict, though it has not confirmed the deployment of such missiles. During a live press briefing, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova received a phone call instructing her not to comment on reports of the ICBM strike.
As tensions rise, the international community is closely monitoring the situation, with some countries already closing their embassies in Kyiv due to increased threats of Russian aggression.
