The Federation of Russia accused Western countries of helping Ukraine in its attack last week on the Black Sea Fleet headquarters in Sevastapol, Crimea.

“There is no doubt that the attack had been planned in advance using Western intelligence means, NATO satellite assets and reconnaissance planes and was implemented upon the advice of American and British security agencies and in close coordination with them,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

Last Friday, the Russian-appointed governor of Sevastapol, a city that had fallen under Russian rule in the 2014 annex of Crimea, confirmed the attack and warned that more could be on the horizon. After some time passed, he lifted the warning but told people to remain evacuated from the city’s center.

A recorded 34 officers were killed in the attack and over 100 had been wounded. Ukraine claimed that the fleet commander Admiral Viktor Sokolov was dead, but new video footage released by the Russian Defense Ministry implies he is still alive. He was also briefly interviewed by Russian state television on Wednesday.

“What happened to us? Nothing happened to us,” Sokolov said. “Life goes on. The Black Sea Fleet confidently and successfully carries out the tasks assigned to it by the command. Surface forces, submarine forces, naval aviation, and coastal troops are successfully completing tasks.”
