Florida Governor and current presidential candidate Ron DeSantis unveiled a new 10-point economic strategy during a campaign stop in Rochester, New Hampshire, on Monday.

This plan, which DeSantis called “the Declaration of Economic Independence,” is intended to protect the middle class, hold government bureaucrats accountable, and reclaim economic power from China.

This announcement comes one week after the DeSantis campaign announced a major staffing cutback to “streamline” the run for the White House. DeSantis is currently polling at just 17 percent support compared to former President Donald J. Trump’s 54 percent, although the single-digit percentages of the other Republican candidates still put DeSantis securely in second place. With the first Republican primary debate less than a month away, the Florida governor is likely hoping to shift the narrative away from his campaign struggles and focus on his policy goals.

“My promise is that I will always fight for our citizens, our families, our future, and our way of life — and I will never back down,” DeSantis told the crowd of business owners and factory workers. “We will take back control of our destiny — and ensure that our future is as proud, independent, and free as our past.”

The Declaration of Economic Independence consists of 10 pillars, foremost among them ending the United States’ “abusive relationship with the Chinese Communist Party.” The strategy for accomplishing this includes reversing trade deficits, banning goods based on stolen intellectual property, adding further protections against child labor, and incentivizing companies to keep their investments and strategic resources within the US.

DeSantis’ plan also promises to achieve “3 percent growth by incentivizing investment, eliminating bureaucracy and red tape, and keeping taxes low.” This will be done by pushing for a competitive tax system, slashing federal agencies, and banning individual stock trading for members of Congress.

A fact sheet provided by the DeSantis campaign lists the additional points of the Declaration as follows:

The Trump campaign and its supporters criticized DeSantis prior to the Rochester speech, citing factors like an ongoing property insurance crisis in Florida as evidence against the governor’s economic record. But on Sunday, DeSantis addressed these criticisms and the idea that Trump has a “stronghold” on the majority of the base, stating: “I’m the candidate that’s more likely to beat Biden. I’m more reliable on policy. I think we’ve seen my record in Florida, and I’m much more likely to actually get all this stuff done.”

Governor DeSantis is scheduled to continue campaigning in New Hampshire until the end of the week.
