CEO Sam Altman is looking to transform OpenAI from a nonprofit organization into a for-profit company, according to a report from The Information. This would mean that the AI developer, whose flagship product is ChatGPT, would not be controlled by the nonprofit board of directors and would be free to pursue any technological powers to meet investor demands.

The report claims they spoke to a source who overheard the conversation at a shareholder meeting.

The source said they heard Altman suggesting the firm could become a for-profit benefit corporation (b-corp), which is the model used by Anthropic and xAI.

Altman along with his directorship staff are undecided, and the report added that they might choose a different path altogether.

When contacted by the media about the comments, OpenAI stated: “We remain focused on building AI that benefits everyone. The nonprofit is core to our mission and will continue to exist.”
