According to a new poll from left-leaning news outlet Axios, a majority of Americans (51 percent) support the idea of conducting mass deportations of illegal immigrants. This includes 42 percent of Democrats, 45 percent of Latino Americans, and 46 percent of Independent voters.

Additionally, about 40 percent of Black Americans support the prospect of beginning mass deportations of those that have entered the United States illegally. 68 percent of Republicans said they support it, 60 percent of boomers, and 48 percent of millennials. Only 35 percent of Gen Z Americans would support the policy, the lowest of any group polled. A total of 6,251 American adults were surveyed in the study done in partnership with The Harris Poll, which was held from March through April 2024.

Illegal immigration has skyrocketed under the Biden administration, with an unprecedented 3.2 million enforcement actions in FY 2023, up from 646,000 in FY 2020.

According to a report from The New York Times, Trump is planning to intensify his immigration policy should he get into office in November, ramping up deportations and therefore significantly increasing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) round-up operations.

Tom Homan, who was the leader of ICE for the first 18 months of the first Trump administration, said he agreed to Trump’s request to come back in a hypothetical second term and said he would “help to organize and run the largest deportation operation this country’s ever seen.”

“Trump will unleash the vast arsenal of federal powers to implement the most spectacular migration crackdown … Mass deportation will be a labor-market disruption celebrated by American workers, who will now be offered higher wages with better benefits to fill these jobs,” former Trump advisor Stephen Miller said. “Americans will also celebrate the fact that our nation’s laws are now being applied equally, and that one select group is no longer magically exempt.”
