In the midst of a week filled with unusually heightened fears of cyberattacks, political conspiracies, and national division, a major film studio is teasing a film with a frightening vision for America’s future.

The new action film, appropriately entitled “Civil War,” shows a country divided, with the US Military facing off against civilian militias in a display many feel is all too real.

Directed by Alex Garland (“Annihilation,” “28 Days Later”) and distributed by A24 (“Uncut Gems,” “Everything Everywhere All At Once”), Civil War follows a group of journalists — played by Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, and Stephen McKinley Henderson — as they navigate the perilous landscape of the not-so-United States. Details on the plot of the film are scarce, but the first trailer reveals a handful of interesting details:

  • 19 American states have already seceded and formed splinter states, including something called “The Florida Alliance” and, shockingly, a union of Texas and California into “the Western Forces”;
  • The “three-term president” (played by Parks N’ Rec actor Nick Offerman) has authorized military action against the rebel groups — including air strikes against civilians;
  • Journalists are now killed on sight in Washington D.C.

Alongside hints of some kind of White Nationalist threat, a possible reference to the far-right, Hawaiian shirt-wearing Boogaloo Boys, and the ominous tagline “All Empires Fall,” “Civil War” promises to be either a striking warning about the consequences of America’s political division or a heavy-handed escalation of that very problem.

Among online commentators, the immediate perception was one of suspicion, with the phrase “Predictive Programming” dominating the conversation.

Is “Civil War” a conservative-oriented look at the dangers of government tyranny and the military industrial complex? Or it is intended to promote liberal agenda items and glorify heroic journalists from the mainstream media? Opinions vary…

However, many have drawn a direct comparison between this film and the Netflix original movie “Leave the World Behind,” which premiered last Friday. In this post-apocalyptic psychological thriller — which stars Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, and Ethan Hawke and was executive produced by Barack and Michelle Obama — two families fight to survive as modern technology breaks down amid cyberattacks, civil war, and a political coup.

The film’s release also coincided with reports of a foreign cyberattack against critical American infrastructure on Tuesday, followed by a mass recall and software update to more than 2 million Teslaswhich was featured prominently in the movie.

Some are calling this series of recent events a coincidence — but others see something bigger at play.

“Civil War” will hit theaters in Spring 2024.

What happens after that remains to be seen…
