The Mexican-American War (1846–1848) gave the U.S. control over Arizona, New Mexico, California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming, marking the first major war fought explicitly for expansion. Soon after, the U.S. purchased Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million, a deal mocked at the time but later revealed to be full of gold and oil, cementing America’s continental growth.
