Meta has announced a significant crackdown on spammy and manipulative content on Facebook, targeting accounts using deceptive tactics such as unrelated captions, excessive hashtags, or operating within coordinated spam networks.

The company will reduce reach and remove monetization privileges for these accounts, and those found engaging in fake engagement or impersonation will face stricter penalties.

“Spammy content can get in the way of one’s ability to ultimately have their voices heard, regardless of one’s viewpoint, which is why we’re targeting the behavior that’s gaming distribution and monetization,” Meta says.

Facebook is also enhancing moderation tools, allowing users to report misleading comments and enabling page owners to automatically hide comments from suspected impersonators.

In 2024, Meta has already removed over 100 million spam pages and more than 23 million impersonator profiles.

These initiatives are part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s effort to restore Facebook’s focus on authentic, user-driven posts. The changes are intended to improve user experience and support genuine content creators.
