Former congresswoman Liz Cheney (R-WY) told The Washington Post that she is considering a third-party presidential run to defeat Donald Trump in 2024.
Liz Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, said she plans to do “whatever it takes” to stop Trump from winning the election. Several years ago, Liz said, she would have never considered a third-party run, but said the stakes are too high to rule it out now.
Liz was being interviewed by the Post to advertise her new book Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning, which argues that Trump will transform the United States into a dictatorship if he wins another election. She claims that Trump will refuse to leave office and overturn term limits. (For context, the United States only imposed term limits on presidents after Democratic President Franklin D. Roosevelt served four terms on implicit ‘state of emergency’ justifications. He broke an unwritten precedent set by America’s first president, George Washington, who only sought two terms before resigning).
“Several years ago, I would not have contemplated a third-party run,” Cheney told the Post on Monday. “I happen to think democracy is at risk at home, obviously, as a result of Donald Trump’s continued grip on the Republican Party, and I think democracy is at risk internationally as well.”

Cheney said she will come to a decision within the next few months. “We face threats that could be existential to the United States and we need a candidate who is going to be able to deal with and address and confront all of those challenges,” Cheney said. “That will all be part of my calculation as we go into the early months of 2024.”
To qualify for the presidential debates in Fall 2024, a candidate must have a minimum of 15 percent support in national polls along with other prerequisites, according to The Commission on Presidential Debates.
Cheney said she is not ruling out supporting President Joe Biden or even campaigning for him to prevent Trump from getting elected. Further, Cheney said she will do everything in her power to prevent Republican voters from electing a pro-Trump majority in the House of Representatives. In place of Trump-aligned congressmen, Cheney said she will back “pro-Constitution candidates” and “serious people” from any party.
