House Speaker Mike Johnson is contemplating the use of recess appointments to expedite the confirmation of President Trump’s Cabinet nominees, including Matt Gaetz as Attorney General, if the Senate continues to delay the process. Johnson expressed frustration over the Senate’s slow pace and emphasized the need for quick confirmations, stating that such delays would be detrimental to the country.
The constitutional process allows the President to make temporary appointments during congressional recesses, but both chambers must agree to adjourn for at least 10 days for this to occur. Since winning reelection, Trump has expressed frustration with the slow process, arguing that similar delaying tactics confounded his cabinet appointments during his first term.

“Any Republican Senator seeking the coveted LEADERSHIP position in the United States Senate must agree to Recess Appointments (in the Senate!), without which we will not be able to get people confirmed in a timely manner,” he wrote on Truth Social. “Sometimes the votes can take two years, or more. This is what they did four years ago, and we cannot let it happen again. We need positions filled IMMEDIATELY!”
Johnson’s comments come amid a highly partisan atmosphere in Washington, with strong opposition from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries against circumventing the traditional confirmation process.
Critics warn that using recess appointments could undermine the Senate’s role in advising and consenting to nominations. Johnson remains hopeful that the Senate will fulfill its duties but has not ruled out recess appointments as a necessary measure if the situation does not improve.
