Amazon founder Jeff Bezos said he is moving from Seattle, Washington to the Miami area in order to be closer to his parents and the operation site of his space exploration company Blue Origin.

Bezos, currently the third richest man in the world at $161.6 billion net worth, made the announcement on his Instagram account. He uploaded an old video of himself showing off his office in his Seattle garage where he started Amazon in 1994. In the caption, Bezos waxed nostalgic about his home of many years.

“I’ve lived in Seattle longer than I’ve lived anywhere else and have so many amazing memories here,” he wrote. “As exciting as the move is, it’s an emotional decision for me. Seattle, you will always have a place in my heart.”

He said the man recording the video was his father, whom he wants to be near. “My parents have always been my biggest supporters. They recently moved back to Miami, the place we lived when I was younger (Miami Palmetto High class of ’82—GO Panthers!) I want to be close to my parents, and Lauren and I love Miami.”

He is referring to his stepfather, a Cuban immigrant named Miguel “Mike” Bezos. His biological father was a man named Ted Jorgensen , who as of 2013 was making a living as a bike shop owner in Arizona.

Bezos added that he also wants to be closer to his aerospace manufacturing and space technology company Blue Origin, a competitor to SpaceX.

“Also, Blue Origin’s operations are increasingly shifting to Cape Canaveral,” he wrote, referring to an island off the coast of Orlando. “For all that, I’m planning to return to Miami, leaving the Pacific Northwest.”

Bezos recently purchased two mansions on the Indian Creek island located in the Miami area, one for $79 million and the other for $68 million.

Bezos also has homes in Washington, D.C., New York City, Los Angeles, Maui, and Texas. His Texas home, a 300,000-acre ranch, contains the launch site for his Blue Origin New Shephard rocket.

Soccer player Lionel Messi recently purchased a mansion in Fort Lauderdale, Florida after joining the local Major League soccer team Inter Miami. Financiers Josh Harris, Dan Loeb, and Ken Griffin all bought mansions in Miami Beach since the COVID pandemic, the last of which moving his business headquarters from Chicago to South Florida. NFL legend Tom Brady also recently bought a two-acre lot in Indian Creek on which he plans to build a sprawling waterfront mansion.
