On a special Saturday episode of the PBD Podcast, Patrick, Adam, and Tom were joined by journalist and news anchor Chris Cuomo, host of NewsNation’s Cuomo. Together, they discussed his family’s history, the Cuomo brothers’ recent career shakeups, and the need for decency and transparency in politics.

Here are some of the main takeaways from the latest episode:

1. “It’s Not a Shadow, It’s a Shine” – The Cuomo Family History

The story of the Cuomo family begins with former New York Governor Mario Cuomo, a man who kickstarted a New York dynasty in a bygone era of politics. That legacy continued with Andrew Cuomo, who followed his father into the Governor’s mansion. Meanwhile, Chris Cuomo chose a different path: “Andrew ran for office, I ran from office.”

During the podcast, Cuomo unveiled what it was like growing up in one of the most talked-about families in American politics, how the Cuomo family values shaped both Chris and Andrew’s careers, and what part the family should play in the modern political world where media “lusts for gotcha moments.”

2. “Fredo Unhinged” – Chris Cuomo Addresses Personal Controversies

At the height of their careers, Chris and Andrew Cuomo both found themselves at the center of controversy. While Andrew faced accusations of impropriety and mishandling the pandemic, Chris Cuomo was hit with allegations of journalistic misconduct, the appearance of a conflict of interest, and the infamous “Fredo” video. Ultimately, both men took major hits to their careers, with Andrew resigning as governor and Chris losing his job at CNN.

The episode dove into the controversies and their consequences as Cuomo sought to add context to what happened behind the scenes. He also opened up about his post-CNN struggles, unveiling a battle with mental health issues. “I have depression,” Cuomo unveiled, hoping to address the shame and stigma around therapy. “But there are no problems, only opportunities.”

3. “Perspective, Context, and Testing” – Why People Have Less Trust Than Ever

Americans don’t trust the government, media, or the nation’s institutions anymore…PBD questioned Cuomo, one of the biggest names in media, as to where the distrust may come from. Cuomo highlighted some of his own controversial remarks like “protests don’t need to be peaceful” and “people shouldn’t download WikiLeaks files” to show that one of the major problems with today’s media is taking content out of context.

The former CNN news anchor also discussed UFOs, the Kennedy Assassination, the Steele Dossier, and RFK’s most controversial statements.

4. “You Are Fake News” – Trump Got What He Asked For

Cuomo discussed how former President Donald Trump may have been a vessel of legitimate grievance for the American people but argued that his downfall within media was inevitable. When Trump began attacking mainstream media, Cuomo argued that it was only a matter of time before the media chose to fight back.

Cuomo also denied that the media colluded against the former president, even during the peak of COVID-19.

5. “It’s a Game That’s Killing Us” – Cuomo’s Take on the Two-Party System

Chris Cuomo made it clear: he is not anti-establishment…but he is anti-party. Cuomo claimed “anti-establishment” is just code for “tearing it down,” and he doesn’t believe in destroying the current system despite its flaws but does take issue with the fact that nothing has changed within our two-party system.
