Unruly teens taking over downtown Chicago stormed the streets, attacking innocent bystanders, shattering car windows, and sending terrified sightseers fleeing from shots fired.
The “teen takeover” began Saturday evening with large groups wandering in front of traffic while blasting music from portable speakers. Some were trying to gain access to the downtown Art Institute while others were attempting to enter Millennium Park which has a 21 and over policy after certain hours.
Groups began jumping on the hoods of cars, breaking through windows, and attacking drivers and passengers. One man was assaulted from the driver side of his vehicle after several teens jumped up and down on the car’s windshield, recounted his wife, and was transported to a hospital for care.
After gunfire was reported several times amid the chaotic scene, SWAT teams assisted hundreds of police officers, descending on downtown to regain control and order.
Traffic on Michigan Avenue was halted as panicked tourists were escorted by police to their hotels and cars to safely escape the mayhem. The pandemonium appeared to be another “Teen Takeover” of the city that was organized on social media–a similar scene occurred in Chicago just last year.
