Bernard “Bernie” Marcus, the billionaire co-founder of Home Depot, wrote an op-ed for Real Clear Politics to endorse Donald Trump for President in 2024.
“I endorse Donald J. Trump as the nominee of the Republican Party and as our next President. I endorse him not only because he has the best chance of winning the general election but because he is the best person to take on and dismantle the administrative state that is strangling America,” he wrote in the article published Nov. 9.
Marcus said he has been “exhausted” by politics and wishes he could sit on the sidelines, but “like so many of us, I realized I could not let myself walk away; the stakes are just too high.”
His piece criticized the decline of cities into “lawlessness” due to “George Soros-elected prosecutors,” pointed to America’s “unprotected” southern border, and deplored low test scores at America’s schools.
Marcus, 94, recounted his success story in the piece, explaining how he lost his job at 48 years of age only to found the wildly successful Home Depot home hardware chain. “Only in America, the land of opportunity, could being without a job and broke be a great opportunity,” he wrote, arguing that the direction the country is moving in spells the doom for America’s “land of opportunity” status.
In a guest appearance on Fox Business, Marcus recently said, “If we don’t change the government in this next ’24 election, this country is dead. I’ve never said that before, I don’t see any way out.”

“For Republicans, the choice is also simple. Let’s face it: Donald Trump is going to win the nomination,” he went on, referring to Trump’s colossal 56 percent lead in the polls of GOP candidates. “You should be doing all you can to ensure his winning the general election.” Marcus highlighted the new challenges in the Middle East as one key reason for why Trump should be the nominee.
Bernie Marcus is well known for his philanthropic endeavors, having given away $2 billion over the last 30 years. He has pledged to give away 90 percent of his net worth (an estimated $9 billion) to his philanthropic organization the Marcus Foundation.
Marcus has previously voiced his support for Trump, such as during the 2020 election. At the time, Home Depot sought to distance itself from the retired founder in order to avoid controversy. A hashtag formed among Democratic voters calling for a boycott of Home Depot stores. Marcus also donated $7 million toward Trump’s successful 2016 presidential effort.
