Dan Simmons says the hardest thing to replace after 20 years in Special Forces is the brotherhood—men who would die for you and wake up every day choosing to live for you, training for lethality and survivability.

He admits he also misses “the toys,” especially the feeling when a belt‑fed machine gun opens up and “warms his heart,” calling that roar and smell the closest thing to heaven on earth for a Green Beret who’s grateful those guns were always pointed at the bad guys.
