German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius told European audiences that the continent must “become ready for war” in light of the conflicts in Ukraine and Israel.

“We have to get used to the idea that there could be a threat of war in Europe,” he said. “We have to become ready for war.” He made the comments on German TV station ZDF’s show “Berlin Direkt.”

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) politician said Germany must be defensive, referring to both its government and its society.

Pistorius said Germany’s military defenses had been “messed up” over the last 30 years, but resolved that it would be a completely different place in a ten years, referring to this period as a turning point.

The idea of creating a European Union (EU) army has been suggested for some time.

In 2015, in the midst of the Syrian refugee crisis and in light of the alleged threat of Russia, President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker implored politicians to take the notion seriously.

Washington think tanks like the Atlantic Council have been monitoring the moves toward a European army, and many heard Germany’s announcement loudly that it would be increasing its defense spending dramatically in 2022.
