Georgetown Law School is facing backlash for being one of the only ivy league schools which have remained quiet amid the Israel and Palestine conflict.

The Georgetown Voice – the Georgetown editorial boardshared their thoughts on the recent attack in Israel and the retaliation committed in Gaza as a response.

“We condemn Hamas’s attack against Israeli civilians and stand with the Jewish community in their grief,” the statement read. “We also condemn Israel’s indiscriminate use of violence—that amounts to collective punishment—against Palestinian civilians.”

“Emboldened by Western support and media complicity, Israel’s genocidal campaign against Palestinians has only intensified,” they added.

On the opposite end, Jewish students said they face anti-Israeli rhetoric from classmates and outside groups that have been promoted on the Washington D.C. campus. The rhetoric has appeared to be an “orchestrated antisemitic campaign,” instilling fear in some students that physical violence may break out on campus between Israelis and Palestinians.

“Knowing you’re sitting in class next to someone who advocates the destruction of Israel is frightening,” Julia Wax, a first-year Georgetown Law student said to Fox News. “Because it’s law school, people here are nuanced with their hate,” she added.

Georgetown University and President John J. DeGioia issued an initial statement: “As a university, we have a responsibility, in this moment, to contribute to understanding, and to build pathways to peace and reconciliation. We have a responsibility to one another — to provide consolation and support to those who are suffering. May we be equal to the demands of these responsibilities.”

“The editorial board calls on Georgetown to break its silence on Israel’s violent occupation of Palestine. Because of Georgetown’s negligence, the onus has fallen on students to educate others on the truth of the issue,” the students continued.

DeGioia was then criticized for “failing to make two critical distinctions: first, it doesn’t properly attribute the ‘unprecedented terrorist attack’ to Hamas, and second, it implies these attacks emerged from a vacuum.”

“DeGioia’s statement reinforces Islamophobic stereotypes that Palestinians, who are majority Muslim, are terrorists, legitimizing hate toward the Palestinian community and its allies.”

Ivy league schools like Harvard and Columbia have held massive protests supporting Palestine. These protests received massive backlash, resulting in students rumored to have been put on a blacklist from CEOs and prospective employers.
