Former U.S. Representative George Santos pleaded guilty to wire fraud and aggravated identity theft on Monday, concluding a federal fraud case that resulted in his expulsion from Congress. Santos faced numerous felony charges, including misusing campaign funds and collecting unemployment benefits while employed, but negotiated a plea deal just weeks before his scheduled trial.

In court, he expressed regret for betraying the trust of his constituents and accepted responsibility for his actions. He now faces over six years in prison and is required to pay at least $370,000 in restitution, with sentencing slated for February 7.

Santos, who spent less than a year representing New York’s Third Congressional District as a Republican, was expelled from Congress after an ethics investigation revealed significant misconduct. He had previously denied wrongdoing despite admitting to fabricating aspects of his background, including his education, employment history, and even his Jewish ancestry.
