Anyone who spends even a short amount of time online is likely familiar with the phenomenon of “Florida Man,” the collective name for Sunshine State residents engaging in unusual, extreme, and oftentimes illegal behaviors. But in 2024, the historic city of St. Augustine, Florida is giving competitors the chance to prove themselves worthy of the name at the first annual Florida Man Games.
The event, which is scheduled for February 2024, is described by organizers as “the most insane athletic showdown on Earth.” The one-of-a-kind competition will capitalize on Florida’s unconventional reputation, allowing participants to engage in homages to their state’s culture of booze, mullets, and alligators.

Among the planned events are “beer belly sumo wrestling” and a “catalytic converter and copper pipe” bike race, as well as team events like the “weaponized pool noodle duel.” Another attention-grabbing event is the “Evading Arrest Obstacle Course,” which will feature teams of competitors jumping fences and running through yards to escape actual police officers.
Dan “Nitro” Clark and Lori “Ice” Fetrick, both of whom appeared on the ‘90s reality show “American Gladiators” have been brought on as event judges and referees.
“We thought, ‘How can we really play on these Florida Man headlines that we hear so much about?’ Someone gave me the idea to make it into an athletic competition,” said event organizer and St. Augustine resident Pete Melfi. “It’s going to be a wild day of mud games and Florida-style obstacle courses. It’s going to really be an opportunity to live that Florida Man life for a day.”
The first annual Florida Man Games will be held on February 24, 2024, in St. Augustine, Florida. Tickets are available for sale via the event website, and the hope is to expand the event into a yearly celebration of all things Floridian.
As Melfi said, “If you had a fever and you really had Florida on your mind when you went to sleep, this would be your fever dream.”
