A new wave of COVID-19 is among us — at least that’s what “experts” are echoing as positive COVID hospitalizations have risen, and “Do Not Comply” trends on X.

So-called experts are warning it is “reasonably certain” the United Kingdom is at the center of experiencing not only a wave of Covid-positive patients, but news of the new variant emerging.

The new variant, named BA.2.86, was discovered through genetic sequencing, according to Yahoo! Life, and has been found to have many mutations. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed the detection, with the agency’s deputy director Meera Chand saying, “We are aware that BA.2.86 has been detected in the UK. UKHSA is assessing the situation and will provide further information in due course.”

The variance was first detected in Israel and Denmark in late July and has now appeared in Michigan in the United States.

“No one knows about its virulence or how transmissible it is,” said Professor Ronit Calderon-Margalit, director of the School of Public Health at Hebrew University and Hadassah Medical Center. The interest is because it’s so detached from the BA.2 Omicron variant [which drove most COVID cases around the world]. So it’s like a second generation of the BA.2. Supposedly that’s how they see it now.”

News sources around the world are claiming the variant has more than 30 mutations.

Users took to X, (formerly known as Twitter) to share their disagreements on the new variant being echoed throughout mainstream media outlets as “Do Not Comply” trends:

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recorded 10,320 U.S. hospital admissions for COVID-19 in the week ending August 5 — a 14.3% increase from the week prior. States like New York and Michigan are considering masking its residents up again as a precaution.
