Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad barely escaped a possible assassination attempt earlier this month after his vehicle was sabotaged, local media outlets reported on Wednesday.

According to Ahmadinejad’s security detail, on Monday, July 15, the air conditioning in the former president’s primary vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser, malfunctioned, prompting him to switch to a backup car. Soon after, the primary vehicle, now carrying security personnel, spun out of control and crashed into another car while driving on a major highway.

After reporting the incident to authorities, Ahmadinejad’s team disclosed that unidentified “special security agents” had taken the vehicle in for repairs at an unknown location two days prior to the crash. An analysis of the car indicates that its systems may have been tampered with, proving that the government operatives lied about the AC being repaired. The incident is being investigated as a likely assassination attempt.

Earlier this year, Ahmadinejad registered to run for his old office after Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi died in a helicopter crash, but he was ultimately disqualified from holding office again.
