France and Germany have issued strong warnings to President-elect Donald Trump following his refusal to rule out military intervention to control Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory.

As Valuetainment previously reported, Trump said on Tuesday that he would not rule out the possibility of military action to secure American interests in Greenland and Panama. Trump had also briefly floated the idea of attempting to buy Greenland during his first term, but the notion was quickly shot down.

Responding to the President-elect’s remarks, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot emphasized that the European Union will not tolerate any acts of aggression against its member nations.

“There is no question of the EU letting other nations in the world, whoever they may be, attack its sovereign borders,” French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot told the France Inter radio station.

Though not a member of the EU directly, Greenland’s status as a territory of Denmark affords it the protection of the other member states.

“We are a strong continent, we need to strengthen ourselves further,” Barrotcontinued, emphasizing that Europe needs to “wake up” to threats from the outside world and “reinforce ourselves, militarily, in competition.”

However, he also admitted that he does not believe the United States is “inherently imperilaistic,” and he doubts that there would ever be a formal invasion of Greenland. Nevertheless, he noted a global trend towards the “survival of the fittest.”

Meanwhile, German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit reiterated that borders should not be changed by force, citing international principles like the United Nations Charter.

Trump has argued that Greenland is crucial for US national security, a claim Denmark strongly opposes, insisting Greenland is not for sale. The situation has sparked fears of a potential diplomatic crisis between the US and the EU.
