Serial entrepreneur Elon Musk suggested that an artificial intelligence (AI) could become president of the United States in 2032.

He made the comment at the 10th annual ceremony for the “Breakthrough Prize,” an awards show for scientists that is also attended by Hollywood celebrities.

He was asked by a reporter who would win the White House in 2024. Musk laughed at the question, avoided it, and asked back, “Who do you think will win the White House in 2032? Which type of AI? Transformers or diffusion?”

Recently, Musk also warned that AI could “undermine democracy” if it becomes “smart enough,” said AI could become smarter than humans in 2026, and said the technology’s progress is only being held back by the availability of electricity.

“If you define AGI [Artificial General Intelligence] as smarter than the smartest human, I think it’s probably next year, within two years,” Musk said. He added that xAI’s Grok 2, set to rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT, is being held back by a lack of microchips.
