Denmark has opened discussions with President-elect Donald Trump regarding a potential increase in US military presence in Greenland, while firmly stating that the island is not for sale. This comes in response to Trump’s renewed interest in acquiring Greenland, which he claims is vital for US national security amid growing geopolitical tensions in the Arctic.
Danish officials have sought to clarify Trump’s intentions, hoping to avoid a public conflict while addressing his security concerns. Denmark, which retains nominal sovereignty over Greenland, has reportedly communicated privately with Trump’s team about enhancing U.S. security interests without transferring formal sovereignty.

Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede has expressed a desire for independence and emphasized that the island should remain under Greenlandic control.”We have a desire for independence, a desire to be the master of our own house … This is something everyone should respect,” he said. “Greenland is for the Greenlandic people. We do not want to be Danish, we do not want to be American. We want to be Greenlandic.”
Egede’s comments come amid rising international competition for influence in the Arctic due to climate change and its implications for shipping routes and resource access.
Despite some local enthusiasm for the possibility of joining the U.S., Danish leaders are keen to maintain Greenland’s sovereignty. Greenland’s push for independence aligns with its legal rights established under the Self-Government Act of 2009, a move that Egede strongly supports.
The Danish government is preparing for a meeting with Trump, although they do not expect it to occur before his inauguration. The discussions are likely to focus on mutual interests, such as security and resource management in the strategically significant Arctic region.
