Canada has announced a 100% tariff on imported Chinese electric vehicles and a 25% tariff on Chinese steel and aluminum, effective October 1. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that these tariffs aim to address China’s unfair trade practices and strengthen Canada’s position in the global EV supply chain.
This decision aligns with similar measures from the United States and follows a consultation process regarding concerns over Chinese imports.

Trudeau emphasized the importance of global cooperation to ensure fair competition, as domestic pressure mounts to counter China’s influence. The US is expected to finalize its own tariffs on Chinese products soon, reflecting a coordinated effort among allies. Currently, the only Chinese EV available in Canada is the Tesla Model 3, manufactured in Shanghai.
