The Boston Celtics were sold to Bill Chisholm, co-founder of Symphony Technology Group, on Thursday morning for a record-breaking $6.1 billion, making it the most expensive sale of a North American sports franchise. The deal surpasses the previous record set by the Washington Commanders, who were sold for $6.05 billion in 2023.

Chisholm, a Massachusetts native and lifelong Celtics fan, leads a consortium that includes current co-owner Robert Hale and Bruce Beal Jr. of Related Companies. The transaction, which will occur in two phases, initially transfers 51% ownership, with the remaining 49% expected to be sold in 2028.

The sale is currently pending approval by the NBA Board of Governors and is expected to be finalized by late June or early July.

The Celtics have been owned by the Grousbeck family since 2002, when Wyc Grousbeck led a group to purchase the team for $360 million. Under their leadership, the franchise has flourished, securing multiple NBA Finals appearances and clinching their 18th championship last season. Grousbeck will continue to serve as the team’s governor through the 2027-28 season, ensuring a smooth transition.

This historic sale underscores the soaring valuations of NBA franchises, as teams continue to benefit from lucrative media rights deals and expanding global reach. However, the Celtics also face financial challenges ahead, including a record payroll and significant luxury tax obligations.

Chisholm’s acquisition marks the beginning of a new era for one of the league’s most storied franchises. As a dedicated Celtics fan, he is expected to uphold the team’s competitive legacy while navigating the financial landscape of modern professional basketball.
