The Biden-Harris campaign staged a press conference on Tuesday morning outside the Manhattan courthouse where former President Donald Trump and his attorneys are preparing for closing arguments in Stormy Daniels hush money trial. As the trial enters its final stage, Biden campaign surrogates—including notoriously anti-Trump actor Robert De Niro—warned about the “threat” Trump will pose to the country if he is reelected.

Arriving surrounded by Biden campaign staffers and wearing an N95 facemask, De Niro took the podium first to declare his love for New York City and denounce Trump as a threat to its way of life.

“I love this city. I don’t want to destroy it. Donald Trump wants to destroy not only the city, but the country, and eventually he can destroy the world,” the 80-year-old “Goodfellas” actor stated, adding that “Trump does not belong in my city.”

At other points in his speech, De Niro called Trump “a clown,” “a tyrant,” and “a loser,” and claimed that before taking office, he was “just another grubby real estate hustler masquerading as a big shot,” “a two-bit playboy lying his way into the tabloids.”

De Niro also insisted that, if Trump is reelected, he will refuse to leave office at the end of his term.

“If Trump returns to the White House, you can kiss these freedoms goodbye that we all take for granted. If he gets in, I can tell you right now, he will never leave! He will never leave! You know that. He will never leave,” DeNiro stated emphatically. “What does that mean? Is that the country we want to live in? Do we want him running this country and saying, ‘I’m not leaving, I’m dictator for life’?”

To reinforce this dire prediction, De Niro was joined by former Capitol Police officers Harry Dunn and Michael Fanone, both of whom were present at the Capitol on January 6.

“Donald Trump is the greatest threat to our democracy and the safety of communities across the country today,” declared Dunn, who lost the Democratic primary for Maryland’s 3rd Congressional District earlier this month. “He has encouraged and continues to encourage political violence…We have a presidential candidate who champions and support it, and we cannot have that.”

Fanone, who reported suffering a brain injury and heart attack after being assaulted by rioters on January 6th, said that he was present “to remind Americans of what Donald Trump is capable of and the violence that he unleashed on all of Americans.”

Dunn and Fanone both served as witnesses during the Congressional probe into the Capitol riot.

According to surrogates for the Trump campaign, the press conference outside the courthouse smacked of political gamesmanship. President Biden has largely stayed quiet about the various civil and criminal cases against former President Trump, pledging only to address the eventual verdicts from the White House, not from a “campaign setting” to avoid making things “political.” However, in the eyes of the administration’s critics, the pre-planned public spectacle outside the courthouse violates this promise.

After the Democrat staffers departed, the Trump campaign held its own conference in the same place, denouncing the move as “all politics.”

“If you don’t think this is politics, why did the Democrats wheel out a retread like Robert De Niro,” Trump adviser Jason Miller said.
