In an updated study, Pew Research Center found that 63 percent of Americans support the legalization of abortion in “all or most cases,” up from 62 percent in June 2022. Views on abortion have varied slightly over the last 30 years, but on average rest between 50 and 60 percent in favor; by contrast, just 36 percent of Americans say abortion should be illegal in all or most cases.
Broken down along religious lines, those without religious affiliation 86 percent think abortion should be legal in all more most cases, while just 13 percent think it should be illegal. Catholics are divided 59 percent 40 percent.

Among Protestants, things get more interesting. Pew sorted for race: Black Protestants are divided 71 percent for and 26 percent against; White nonevangelical Protestants are 64 percent for and 33 percent against; and White evangelical Protestants are 25 percent for and 73 percent against.
Meanwhile, 57 percent of those are lean Republican say it should be illegal in all or most cases, while 85 percent of Democrats say it should be legal.
The majority of both American men (61 percent) and women (64 percent) say abortion should be legal.
Majorities of American adults across races support legal abortion: Asian (76 percent), Black (73 percent), White (60 percent) and Hispanic (59 percent). Majorities of Americans across age groups agree: 65+ (59 percent), 50-64 year olds (57 percent), 30-49 year olds (61 percent) and 18-29 year olds (76 percent).
