Secret Service agents assigned to the protective detail for Naomi Biden, granddaughter of President Joe Biden and daughter of Hunter Biden, opened fire on suspects attempting to break into an unmarked agency vehicle on Sunday night in Washington DC. The incident outside Naomi Biden’s Georgetown residence led to all three suspects fleeing without injury, further highlighting the rising crime problem in the nation’s capital.
According to an anonymous report from an agency spokesperson, the shooting took place just before midnight on Sunday, when agents spotted three individuals breaking a window on a parked and unoccupied Secret Service vehicle.
“During this encounter, a federal agent discharged a service weapon and it is believed no one was struck,” the spokesman said. “The offenders immediately fled the scene in a red vehicle and a regional lookout was issued to supporting units. There was no threat to any protectees and the incident is being investigated by the DC Metropolitan Police Department and the Secret Service.”
It is unclear whether Naomi Biden, 29, was present with agents at the time, but sources indicate that she was made aware of the situation shortly after. Biden is the daughter of Hunter Biden and his ex-wife Kathleen Buhle, and works as a lawyer with the firm of Arnold & Porter.

Washington DC has seen a significant rise in violent urban crime, including carjackings and vehicle thefts, in the last year. As Valuetainment previously reported, Washington has seen an extreme rise in crime by every single metric except burglary. Robbery has increased by 70 percent, motor vehicle theft by 105 percent, theft by 22 percent, and arson by 125 percent. Citywide homicide rates are on track to break a 20-year record.
DC police have reported more than 750 carjackings in 2023, and an estimated 6,000 vehicles have been stolen. Even sitting members of Congress have not been immune to the threat of violent crime. In early October, Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) was carjacked at gunpoint by three men, and Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN) was attacked in her apartment building in February.

Trends of violent crime and vehicle theft are similarly increasing in other major population centers, causing elected leaders to consider unconventional methods of addressing the problem. Earlier this year, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson sued Kia and Hyundai for not adding appropriate anti-theft measures to their vehicles. Similarly, Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser launched a program earlier this month handing out Apple AirTags to residents to allow them to track their cars once they are inevitably stolen.
