The Biden administration and its affiliates have long been accused of being in bed with the mainstream media, but a new interview has revealed that certain White House staffers took that more literally than anyone knew. According to a Vogue article published on Thursday, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre maintained—and has now ended—a longtime romantic relationship with CNN anchor Suzanne Malveaux.

Jean-Pierre, the first black lesbian immigrant to serve as White House Press Secretary, was the subject of a fawning profile by Vogue Magazine published earlier this week. The lengthy puff piece heaped breathless praise upon the historic Press Secretary, stating:

That quality of directness — blunt, with a touch of compassion — is Jean-Pierre’s currency at the briefing podium. She meets the White House press corps almost daily — favoring bright colors and bold eye shadow when she does — and, while she’s more reserved than some of her predecessors and less likely to respond to provocation with a social media – ready retort, she has sharpened her own technique: disarm with a smile, then lay out the facts at hand.

However, it was the discussion of the 49-year-old Press Secretary’s personal life that quickly captured attention. According to the profile, she shares her nine-year-old daughter with CNN national correspondent Suzanne Malveaux. “It was Malveaux who initiated the adoption process, not long after she and Jean-Pierre started dating,” Vogue stated.

The piece went on to describe how Malveaux and Jean-Pierre met at the 2012 Democratic National Convention while Jean-Pierre was working for former President Barack Obama. The two women began dating soon after and moved in together in 2014, at which point they adopted their daughter. Though Jean-Pierre spoke highly of her partner in her recent memoir, Vogue revealed that the two had recently separated. “I’m a single mom who is co-parenting this amazing kid,” Jean-Pierre says. “Our number-one priority is her privacy and to make sure we create an environment that’s nurturing.”

Though she provided no further commentary on the separation, many have questioned the potential for a conflict of interest raised by such an intimate relationship between representatives of the White House and a mainstream media outlet. Jean-Pierre’s connection to Malveaux was certainly not a secret, but the news of their separation seems to be the first time many in the general public learned they were together to begin with.

Earlier this year, Malveaux announced her departure from CNN after more than 20 years with the network, describing her desire to focus on spending time with her daughter in a memo sent to her colleagues.

News of the breakup comes shortly after Karine Jean-Pierre’s official government X account published what appeared to be a post that was supposed to come from President Joe Biden, revealing that the president is apparently not in control of his own social media accounts.
