The panel explains why live sports have become increasingly valuable in a fragmented television market. The numbers are striking: sports went from only 14 of the top 100-rated TV programs in 2005 to 96 of the 100 most-watched U.S. telecasts in 2025. Sports Business Journal reported that sports claimed 96 of the top 100 U.S. telecasts in 2025, tying 2023’s record. Football overwhelmingly drove the result: NFL and college football accounted for 92 of those 100 slots, including an estimated 84 NFL games. The comparison illustrates how dramatically television has changed. On-demand streaming lets audiences watch entertainment on their own schedules, while major sporting events retain the urgency of live viewing and can still assemble enormous audiences simultaneously. Sports’ dominance extends beyond the top 100. In 2025, sporting events captured 181 of the 200 most-watched telecasts, or 90.5% of that list. The NFL alone accounted for 136 of the top 200 entries, demonstrating football’s extraordinary television reach.
