Critics argue that the council’s decision lacks constitutional legitimacy as Haiti currently has no functioning Parliament to authorize such actions. Fils-Aimé, whose mother was imprisoned during the Duvalier regime, is expected to take office amid hopes for improved governance, although the situation remains precarious.
The transitional government has struggled to address the nation’s crises, with armed gangs controlling significant areas of Port-au-Prince and a lack of democratic elections since 2016. International support remains inadequate as Haiti faces deepening turmoil and humanitarian crises.
