Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced a “pause” in diplomatic relations with the US and Canadian embassies following criticism of his proposed judicial reforms.

The reforms, which include electing judges by popular vote, have been labeled by US Ambassador Ken Salazar as a “major risk to the functioning of Mexico’s democracy” and a potential threat to the US-Mexico trade relationship. Canada’s ambassador also expressed investment concerns.

López Obrador defended the pause as necessary for respecting Mexico’s sovereignty while emphasizing that overall relations with the US and Canada remain unaffected.

The Mexican peso has also been declining amid these political tensions and economic uncertainties.
