Ad Revenue drops (again) – that’s two quarters in a row.
Today (2/2/23) Alphabet said YouTube ad revenue was off 8%, which translate to $7.96 billion for Q4 compared to $8.7B in Q4 2021. That’s $9M per DAY less. So bad news for ad sale two quarters in a row. YouTube is a significant part of Alphabet and Sundar Pichai, CEO, said overall company results were nicked by lower advertising spending at YouTube.
Anticipating the bad news going out in the financials, something good was emphasized the day before as YouTube, in the face of heat from TikTok and Instagram (Reels), began sharing ad revenue with short-form content creators. The Company also bragged about its TikTok killer “Shorts.” Shorts averages 50B views per day which is up from 30B at the beginning of Q2. Ahem, +20B views over 9 months is a small number in the world of YouTube views.
