After all the statements and praise for each other, Bill and Melinda Gates continue to inspire discussion in the wake of their divorce announcement.

On Tuesday, more than a few curious followers of business and society were thinking, “Yeah, sure, you can’t ‘grow as a couple’ any longer, we get it. But, really, why are you splitting up?”

The news came just a couple of years after the former couple spoke in a Netflix series “Inside Bill’s Brain: Decoding Bill Gates.”

Part of that documentary – brought back into public view in a People story — included their relationship – and, looking back, we can see a tiny crack in the armor.

Near the conclusion of the three-part series, its director asked Bill, “If you got hit by a bus today, died, what’s the one thing, the one thing you said, ‘God, I wish I had done that I haven’t done?’ “

“You know, thanking Melinda,” Bill answered.

Also in the Netflix series, they talked about their early days.

“When we first met, she had other boyfriends and I had Microsoft. We were like, ‘Hey we’re not really serious about each other are we? We’re not going to demand each other’s time,’ ” Bill said.

Melinda claimed to be still “figuring it out.”

And then Cupid did his thing.

“But after about a year of that, sort of to our surprise, certainly my surprise, we said, ‘Hey, I love you,’ and she said she loved me and then it was like, wow. Now what’s going to happen?” Bill said.

And there was an amazing track record, too.

“I’ve never heard him complain about her. He’s the only person I know on this earth who I’ve never heard complain about his wife,” the couple’s friend Mike Slade said.

Sometimes ya just can’t grow as a couple any more.
