With today’s ridiculous inflation rates, every dollar counts and an extra $85 in one’s bank account could make a big difference. In a settlement last year, TurboTax’s Intuit Inc. was ordered to pay $141 million to over 4.4 million people across the country.

Thousands of Mainers who qualified for free tax services will now be reimbursed after they were deceived into paying TurboTax for their returns. Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey stated says that checks will be going out this week to over 4 million Americans as part of the settlement.

According to Frey, Maine is getting a rather large chunk of the settlement with more than $740,000 going to over 24,000 residents. However, most consumers are expected to get about $30.

Low-income consumers that qualified for free, federally-supported tax services were impacted the most – they ended up paying TurboTax to file their federal returns across the 2016, 2017 and 2018 tax years due to “predatory deceptive marketing,” according to New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Intuit was contacted by The Associated Press on Friday regarding their May 2022 statement following the settlement agreement to which Kerry McLean, Intuit’s executive vice president and general counsel responded.

“Intuit is pleased to have reached a resolution with the state attorneys general that will ensure the company can return our focus to providing vital services to American taxpayers today and in the future,” McLean stated.

All 50 states and the District of Columbia signed the May 2022 settlement. Those eligible should receive an email from the settlement fund administrator informing them of the appropriate amount of payment. Payment will be mailed throughout May.
