“American Idol” returned Sunday night, complete with White House-tinged drama.

Claudia Conway, 16 and daughter of former White House counselor Kellyanne Conway – as well as attorney George Conway, a fierce Trump critic – jumped into the fray.

She performed (reviews are below) and talked about her parents.

“It’s a lot, but, you know, I only want to spread love,” she told the judges. “I love a compromise, and I do agree to disagree with my mom and my dad.”

Before the audition, as Claudia talked about being nervous, a fine, awkward moment arrived.

Via video screen, Kellyanne replied, “You should be nervous, honey. It’s a very humbling experience. But remember, honey, winners are people who are willing to lose.”

Uh, thanks, Mom.

“She loves me. I love her,” Claudia told judges, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. “I feel like our relationship’s a little iffy. … I got social media, and I was like ‘Well, damn. Now my voice is being heard.'”

Conway has more than 1.7 million followers on TikTok.

The singing reviews, first from HuffPost:

“She struggled to sing ‘Love on the Brain’ by Rihanna, then was ordered to stop and take off her heels by judge Katy Perry, who asked her to try another song.

“This time Conway stayed steady on ‘When We Were Young’ by Adele, showing some performance chops.”

From the judges:

Bryan voted “no,” saying she was “limited a bit” by her range; Richie and Perry said “yes,” though, and Claudia now moves on to the competition’s Hollywood Week.

From Editor in Chief of Yahoo! Music Lyndsey Parker:

“Her first attempt, Rihanna’s ‘Love on the Brain,’ showed potential, but her youth, inexperience, and nervousness also showed, resulting in an unfocused and inauthentic performance. … Claudia’s second performance was more heartfelt.”
