On Monday, The Washington Post released a report that claimed China’s “cyber army” is attacking key U.S. services according to officials in industry security and the American government. This came just days after Leave the World Behind, a movie about cyberattacks produced by the Obama-backed company Higher Ground Productions, was released on Netflix.
The Washington Post story claims that the Chinese military is rapidly advancing its capabilities to disrupt American infrastructure from utilities to communications and transportation. It further claims, citing government officials, that hackers involved with the Chinese military have already burrowed their way into more than 20 “critical entities” over the past year. These hackers are suspected to be waiting for a conflict between the U.S. and China to break out, at which point they will scramble key American power sources.
Washington Post offered three concrete examples of such hacking in the last 12 months: “a water utility in Hawaii,” “a major West Coast port,” and “at least one oil and gas pipeline.” It is said that Chinese entities tried and failed to hack into the operator of Texas’ power grid.

It is quite a coincidence for Wapo to release this report now, as the Obama-produced film on a cyberattack hits devices everywhere. Leave the World Behind was available in select theaters starting November 22nd but became available to the general public on Netflix on December 8th. It is an adaptation of a 2020 apocalyptic novel by Rumaan Alam that tells the story of a society that descends into apocalyptic chaos due to technological and infrastructural failures. The movie shows a cyberattack that shuts down the power grid of the United States.
Additionally, it was recently revealed that Obama has been secretly advising the Biden White House on AI strategy, according to two aides. Obama is deeply involved with conversations regarding the regulation of AI and frequently talks with industry heads about the new technology. Furthermore, Obama publicly endorsed a 70-page text written by the Biden administration’s “top AI thinker” Alondra Nelson which calls for government intervention into internet algorithms to ensure more “equity” in social media content.
