Actor Chris Pratt may want to be a better guardian of his Instagram account. The movie star with nearly 30 million followers did over the weekend what celebrities do–used his social media to promote a cause he cares about. However, this time it was getting the vote out for the People’s Choice Award, long considered the least important of all Hollywood accolades.
Promoting his Pixar film “Onward,” Pratt posted: “With all that’s going on in the world, it is more important than ever that you vote. Just ask any celebrity. They will tell you. Every day. Several times a day. To vote. But me? I will tell you EXACTLY who to vote for.” He continued, “The upcoming 2020 People’s Choice Awards is the most consequential vote in the history of mankind times a million infinity.”
Although nearly half a million of his followers gave the “Guardian of the Galaxy” star the all-important social “Like,” Pratt’s comments section was packed with people who said the star was not reading the room.
“I get this is supposed to be a cute little joke but it comes off as really insensitive. The upcoming election is really important, and everyone should vote, and for you to try and take that and turn it into an ad for your movie is low,” one person wrote.
Someone else pointed out, “I wish I found this funny.”
Others came to Pratt’s defense. “Geez. Everyone really has lost their sense of humor. This is just a lighthearted post and there’s nothing wrong with that,” reasoned one person.
Another, picking up on Pratt’s sarcasm, posted, “Look guys, I know ‘Onward’ has some issues, but this election is too important to vote something third party like Dolittle.”
Other fans echoed this kind of sentiment, saying they don’t want this People’s Choice election to go “Sonic.”
